Cees Nooteboom is in het meest recente nummer van Newsweek opgenomen in een erelijst van ‘the finest travel writers of the past 100 years’, samen met onder anderen V.S. Naipaul, Paul Theroux, Ryszard Kapuscinski en Colin Thubron. Zijn beste boek is volgens het artikel Roads to Santiago, en het blad schrijft: ‘Better known as a novelist than a travel writer in his native Holland, Nooteboom is the ultimate stylist of the genre.
